Oh Happy Day
Posted 29 May, 2005 at 11:41 by wendy in /Chatter | Permanent link
As of last Friday, I'm officially finished with all of my coursework for the year. And I don't just mean for the school year, which would mean that I'm starting up again in September. I'm actually done until January because I don't happen to have any classes scheduled this fall.
Technically this means that I'll have more time to devote to my actual research project which has been sadly neglected over the past couple of months. It also means that we'll manage to get completely moved into the new place sometime soon. We've been living there for almost a month now, and I only just unpacked my books yesterday. For those of you who know me well, this should come as a surprise, since I've often been known to unpack my books before important things like assembling the bed, or unpacking the shower curtain. This past month has felt somewhat like I've been missing an arm or something, and only thanks to the kind folks at Indigo and Amazon have I gotten through with my sanity intact. On the other hand, it now looks like we'll be needing to buy an extra bookshelf. Interesting fact: I own 16 cubic feet of books. Well, ok, my parents will tell you that's wrong as I'm currently storing at least that many books in their basement...but I have 16 cu.ft. worth of books that I find it almost impossible to live without.
How many books do you have...and do you think books will eventually be phased out and people will do most of their reading on the computer?

Kancho: And Other Stories

I often find it enlightening to read other people's travelogues. It's generally a great way to find out about some of the things the tour guides won't tell you.
Recently I came across this one done by a guy who went to Japan to teach english. While I don't know how much of it is true... it's certainly entertaining in parts.
Do you ever read other people's travelogues? Got a good one to share?

Here is a throwback to earlier simpler gaming times.
Super Mario 3. Who didn't get a chance to play that?
Now... would you believe you can win the game in 11 minutes?
You can watch it done here. It is rather incredible to anyone who actually played the game.

So what did you think of Star Wars?

On the whole, I sort of enjoyed it but was left feeling very frustrated. Sars sums it up very nicely. After reading that review, I felt a lot better about it...plus the review is very funny. Warning: Contains spoilers.

brought to you by McSweeney's. If you've ever played any of those terrible text based adventure games...you'll really enjoy this one. Vaguely reminiscent of "Meet the Parents". So E3 is in full swing and I wish I were there. However I'm here toiling away.
So some quick bits of information. I'll put up the press briefings from sony and ms on their consoles later today though presently you can get both if you are a member to IGN. There is also a quick comparison article on GameSpot.
My impressions are though of the sony briefing was that it has a lot of stuff in the box. If you have all the components to justify the use then I can see the point in getting one. Otherwise you are going to have a lot of components in your console that you may not use. Support for two video channels simultaneously? I don't know a lot of people who have two tvs to put side by side to generate the experience I think they are trying to deliver. That doesn't seem compelling and would take away half of my gpu activity to support the second view. I'd rather have the stunning graphics on one tv.
There is definitely a lot of differences in terms of the CPU: 6 general purpose hardware threads on the system in our case and 1 general purpose and 7 specific threads. Instruction sets will vary too as the SPEs have a reduced instruction set that are application specific and we have added more instructions for all 6 threads for processing numerous common game operations (such as dot product).
We both have network adaptors built in. They will apparently put in a gigabit network adaptor. I would guess the only compelling application for this is if you can wire you TV with a cell processor to the network as well (w00t! Hacking a person's TV!) so they can share processing power (somehow??). I don't think broadband will quite reach that stage in the next-gen era to make that level of performance that compelling. They will also have wi-fi built in too (b & g) so if you are close to your neighbour you can leach off them. It will be optional for us.
Controllers. Their controller does look crazy. We've made some minor adjustments to the akibono model (the small one) where the white and black have moved to essentially be shoulder buttons and we've added another that will let you get access to your profile, messages, etc while even in game. They will apparently support seven using bluetooth which strikes me as compelling only if you actually have two monitors going :).
They will also have 6 USB ports which seems excessive for a game console while we have 3.
I'm curious if they are going to do what they did with the ps2 with regard to back-compat: Are they going to include the hw for ps2 and ps1 in the ps3 or are they going to emulate? If the latter I hope they've started development already :).
Really, for everything included the bottom line is I either expect them to be significantly more expensive than us or to lose money on each console to stay competitive.
Be aware when you watch the e3 press briefing by sony that there number comparisons are "selective". A simple example is the dot product comparison: 9 billion is just for the CPU alone for the xbox 360 while they are including the CPU and GPU in their result. There is also a lot of contention on the web regarding whether the video clips shown are really in-game or pre-rendered. I am not familiar enough with techniques to distinquish to come to my own conclusion.
One last thought is that their convex design does inhibit the potential for stacking anything else on the console. I'd also like to find out what the final dimensions will be.
I'll post links to the press briefings later and hopefully our gentle readers won't hinder my game playing of City of Heroes (otherwise I will spite you all and configure queuing disciplines on my firewall mwuahahaha).
If you have some questions that I can answer, feel free to post since almost everything for the xbox 360 has now been revealed.
Here are the respective press briefings:
Sony - 1.27 GB
Microsoft - 882 MB

Motorbike cavalcade on Yonge
Posted 19 May, 2005 at 08:33 by wendy in /Chatter | Permanent link
There were about 100 motorcycles going north on Yonge this morning. The police were escorting them and stopping traffic so they could just keep heading north. No particular similarity in bikes or outfits. Any idea what was going on?

Good to be home

South Beach was a very strange place to spend a week. It was my fourth time going to this particular conference (it's in a different place every year) and I'm finally starting to recognize people and get to enjoy bumping into folks I haven't seen in a year. So it was a pretty good time, but having moved only 4 days before leaving I was quite tired initially, and a week long conference is a pretty tiring experience even if you aren't sleep deprived when you get there.
Home is nice though. Spring flowers are just coming out, the air smells fresh, and I have about 6 different routes I can take walking to work which go through really pretty neighbourhoods with nice gardens. Now all I need to do is get the new place painted so we can finally take all our stuff out of boxes. It still pretty much looks like a bomb hit, and all my books are in boxes...and you can guess how frustrating I find that :) Luckily (or unluckily) we live across the street from Indigo...

The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy
Posted 15 May, 2005 at 09:28 by wendy in /MovingPictures | Permanent link
Went to see this last night and really enjoyed it. Usually when the movie is that dramatically different from the book I get annoyed, but the story flowed pretty well, and I liked the fact that they left in a lot of the little weird things (like the pot of petunias and the sperm whale). Only thing that I really didn't like was Zaphod's extra head...he's supposed to have an extra head and a third arm, and I always imagined that the extra head came out at sort of an angle, so that the two of them could have conversations with one another. If you do go see it (and it was a lot of fun), just be prepared to be a bit weirded out when you first see Zaphod on the spaceship.

Xbox 360

Well, I do feel mildly obliged to put up something on it now that it is out. Here are a couple of fun little pieces if you haven't gotten to see much on it.
The Colony -- movie of a bunch of MS employees talking up some of the info on the console. Xbox.com -- Where most of the specs are, particularly hardware. IGN -- IGN articles on it. They go into more commentary and opinion here too about the console.OK, back to work for me so we can ship this mofo.
Oh, and finally saw Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Good!

Long Time-No Write
Posted 07 May, 2005 at 04:58 by brent in /Chatter | Permanent link
It has been a while since I've blogged. So a couple of quick updates. Fun stuff first--Thomas is coming to visit next week! He's apparently here to do some stuff for work but will have some free time later in the week to hang out. So I'll be able to do the Seattle/Redmond Tour yet again.
Talking about the Redmond portion of the tour: it will now officially be back in full service as of the 12th. That is when MTV is showing off all the work we've been trying to keep mum all this time. W00t! I am tired of keeping so much info confidential. That means I can take him around the offices now and show him the hardware labs in the building as well as all the units we have been working on.
One more quick updated before I go to sleep: I've been diagnosed with sleep apnea so now my hideous snoring through university has an explanation. I now have this wonderful new machine that essentially inflates me as I sleep so my airways don't collapse and I can get some semblance of a good night sleep again. Even Lisa is ecstatic since I don't snore at all anymore I'm not keeping her up at all. It just isn't as easy to cuddle with the not insignificant mask on my head <grin>. Though it was entertaining the first time I said good night wearing it, she was thoroughly and abruptly alarmed seeing me wearing it the first time as she was groggily waking up enough to say good night. Reminds me of that episode in Back to the Future...

A Dog and Cat story

EXCERPTS FROM THE CAT'S DAILY DIARY:Day 283 Of My Captivity.
My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects.
They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while I am forced to eat dry cereal.
The only thing that keeps me going is the hope of escape, and the mild satisfaction I get from ruining the occasional piece of furniture.
Tomorrow I may eat another houseplant.
Today my attempt to kill my captors by weaving around their feet while they were walking almost succeeded; must try this at the top of the stairs. In an attempt to disgust and repulse these vile oppressors, I once again induced myself to vomit on their favorite chair; must try this on their bed.
Decapitated a mouse and brought them the headless body, in attempt to make them aware of what I am capable of, and to try to strike fear into their hearts. They only cooed and condescended about what a good little cat I was. Hmmm, not working according to plan.
There was some sort of gathering of their accomplices. I was placed in solitary throughout the event. However, I could hear the noise and smell the food. More importantly I overheard that my confinement was due to MY power of "allergies" Must learn what this is and how to use it to my advantage.
I am convinced the other captives are flunkies and maybe snitches. The dog is routinely released and seems more than happy to return. He is obviously a half-wit. The bird on the other hand has got to be an informant, and speaks with them regularly. I am certain he reports my every move. Due to his current placement in the metal room, his safety is assured. But I can wait, it is only a matter of time...

Ikea

Having had my own assortment of dealings, both good and bad, with Ikea over the years, I must admit that I found this letter to Ikea about the funniest thing I've read all week.
Hope you enjoy :)

Dr. Matt's bread pudding

Every now and then at work we have "events" (retirements, end-of-terms, etc.) that require people to make food and bring it in to share. When I'm not trying to be explicitly Canadian in my choices (i.e. tourtiere, Nanaimo bars) this is my default option.

This is an interesting chess-like varient. Played on a round board with the equivalent of pawns, bishops and queens.
You can play online or buy the board game.

Mostly moved in
Posted 03 May, 2005 at 21:08 by wendy in /Home | Permanent link
Everything went pretty smoothly, only minor issues with Bell cutting off our phone service at the old apartment early (but not the internet...odd that), and getting the "This number has been changed to" message wrong. Move was fast and easy, which I guess is what I'd expect if I'm paying other people to lug my stuff around. Just wait till I'm rich and can afford to have them pack it all too!
The windows here face north & west, and since we're effectively on the 12th floor, we get really awesome sunsets. Strangely, when they numbered the floors in this building, they skipped 4, 13 & 14...I'm assuming for reasons of superstition. Most amusing.
Ashes seems happy...she's found a closet to hide in. What more does a cat need?
