Colour commentary on the world we live in

A bargain

Posted 30 Jul, 2005 at 22:28 by matt in /Music | Permanent link

The other week when I was spending the day catching up with Kael, we wandered into a used CD store. After scouring the joint for the half-dozen CDs I was sort of kind of hoping to acquire, I flipped through the $2 rack and found a copy of Eternal Nightcap by the Whitlams. For $2, how wrong could I go?

Congratulations and all that

Readers of this space might be interested to know that our own Wendy (purple) got married yesterday. (Probably two-thirds of the people who read this, if not more, knew that already... but I felt it deserved to be mentioned anyhow.)

We've occasionally talked about getting her husband set up in this space, but we'd need to find a suitable shade of orange.

A good article

On the stupidity of the uproar over the sex scene in GTA. You can read it here.

I have to say I largely agree with the author... I mean... I'm much happier to see kids running around looking at sex scenes, than getting hyped on gun-play, violence and so on. But hey... I'm a lover not a fighter so maybe it's just me. ;)

Serenity

Posted 25 Jul, 2005 at 18:13 by blue in /MovingPictures | Permanent link

Have you heard that you Can't stop the signal?

While it's too late to get in on these showings if you missed them, Serenity has been showing in cities around the country. Word of mouth, largely passing from one browncoat to another. Be it here or overseas. The ones listed on this site aren't all of them. They are still showing selected advance screenings.

Some people I know where hanging out in San Diego when Comic-Con aired it (not that what they were doing wasn't important... but this would have been cool too ;) )

On the bright side... the movie is good :)

This link is really aimed at one person in particular... but I'm sure she knows who she is.

(some of the rest of you may waste a moment or two playing as well)

Watch Me Change

Posted 20 Jul, 2005 at 13:33 by blue in /Social | Permanent link

Okay... so this is one of the more ridiculous sites I have seen yet.

The Gap, it would seem, is encouraging everyone to become a stripper.

You can create a virtual you, customize it... and then put on a strip show for your friends.

Warning: the following link contains no nudity but may still be highly disturbing to some people ;) My show is here. Did you get suckered into making one too?

Broadband access over your electrical outlet

Someone had developed a means of sending data over your electrical outlet. Crazy eh?

26 Things Photographic Scavenger Hunt

Posted 20 Jul, 2005 at 08:59 by wendy in /Arts | Permanent link

Some of you have likely heard of 26 Things before, but just in case you haven't...it looks like it could be quite entertaining. I'm likely too busy at the moment to participate, but if any of you do, please send me a link to your photos!

And he'll steal yours too if you let him.

High Tech Underwear

Posted 18 Jul, 2005 at 08:06 by blue in /Technical | Permanent link

The latest in high tech gear... GPS panties.

While clearly a joke... one has to admit that the ability to wear discrete clothing that can be tracked could be useful at times. Children, when traveling in dangerous countries, when you want someone to be able to find you in a crowd, when kidnapped, to cheat at hide-and-go-seek... the possibilities are nearly endless ;)

Amazing Keyboard

Posted 15 Jul, 2005 at 07:44 by blue in /Technical | Permanent link

So this is one of the coolest inventions I've seen in a while...

It's a keyboard where each key has it's own little screen... so you can customize it on the the fly or based on what language, or program etc you are using.

Very useful, very good design.

You can see it for yourself at this site.

Catan Online

Posted 12 Jul, 2005 at 20:17 by blue in /Games | Permanent link

So, outside of just being an addictive game... Microsoft's online version of the Settlers Of Catan also allows you to play rated games against other players.

Have any of you tried it? It will eventually be a subscription based game, but for now it is free to the public.

You can find it at http://zone.msn.com/en/catanonline/

If you do try it... let me know what your rating is... cause in 2 months of playing, I have yet to face anyone with a higher rating than myself... (which makes it a real pain when you lose cause you lose so many points and have to win several games to make it back).

It's not so much that I care what my rating is... I'm just playing for fun and will keep on playing... but I'd like to know if I'm actually that good at the game now, or the rest of the world is just that bad ;)

No Brainer

Posted 12 Jul, 2005 at 07:47 by blue in /Games | Permanent link

This requires shockwave... and though a no brainer is actually kind of fun... if only for the accent. Give it a try.

Yet another little game called Planarity.

(grin) this one however is aimed at the graph theory geeks among us.

Gunpowder, treason, and comic book geekery

Posted 10 Jul, 2005 at 11:09 by matt in /MovingPictures | Permanent link

I ran into my friend decogrrl at a party last night and was surprised to find her head shaved. When I asked about it, she said that she'd been inspired by a photo of Natalie Portman, who'd had hers shaved for her role in an upcoming movie called V for Vendetta. This momentarily distracted me from the main conversation, because: (a) I was unaware that anyone was making a movie of one of my favourite graphic novels ever, (b) I'm really, really curious to see Portman in the role of Evey Hammond now.

Since then I've done a little bit of reading about the upcoming movie, and I've reined in my initial high hopes substantially. Reasons why (with potential spoilers) below the fold.

Try this test...

Posted 05 Jul, 2005 at 07:43 by blue in /Games | Permanent link

Here is a fun little test.

See, the questions themselves are simple, but the whole test is self-referential, making it much more difficult.

I'd love to hear how people make out. How long did it take? Were you able to complete it?

Yet another web comic...

This time of Questionable Content.

Actually, it's not rolling down funny, but I found it to be a good read. Made me smile.

RocketMan & The WestBound Kid

Posted 04 Jul, 2005 at 10:19 by wendy in /Chatter | Permanent link

This was how our subway driver introduced himself the other night. I think he's working on a standup routine or something because it was pretty funny...and not too over the top.

What's the strangest thing you've ever heard a public transit driver say?

Hows & Whys
Who we are

Blue has been known to toss a disc around a field from time to time, and thinks that you should as well. He lives either on the Internet or in Toronto, depending on your perspective. Ask him no questions and there's a good chance he'll tell you no lies. [Site]

Brent hosts the box from which we dangle our conversations, for which we are all eternally grateful. Gratitude is most easily expressed in small bills. Formerly a pawn of the Evil Empire (or maybe a Knight), he has gone over the wall and now toils at a small computer game company in Alberta that no one except for ten million gamers has ever heard of. [Site]

Kael occasionally gets called "Mike"; mostly by people who don't know him. He cooks, he cleans, he maintains Unix servers... what else could you ask for? Currently a slave to the Man, by which we mean retail sales. He has secret plans, but we can't tell you about them. In fact, we've already said too much. [Site]

Lisa is a recreational therapist without a cause. She entertains dreams of ruling over an empire of scrapbooking. Has a well-deserved reputation for enthusiasm, common sense, and tiredness. Ask her about her teapots, but don't touch them.

Matt is just this guy, you know? A mathematician by training and a layabout by inclination; he currently has an Urban Commuter Campus in the American Midwest convinced that they should pay him for plying these trades. The designer and administrator of this site, which means in a sense this is all his fault. [Site | E-mail]

Sky is a salesman during the day. At night he doesn't bother: his words are like unto those of a god, and you can agree or you can be wrong. Lives in the World of Warcraft, with a sattelite office in Toronto. Known to play games on occasion.

Wendy has never run away to join the circus, but pursuing graduate work in medical imaging is perhaps just as good. She didn't choose her current abode on the basis of proximity to a Toronto Public Library branch, but we wouldn't put it past her. Married to one of the other authors here, but you'll have to read the archives to find out which one. [Site]
