The 39 Dollar Experiment

Posted 03 Mar, 2006 at 07:36 by blue in /Chatter | Permanent link

IN keeping with my previous post about $2 bills, here is another fun sort of experiment you can run.

Tom Locke, average Joe, took $39 in stamps and e-mailed companies to see what sort of free-bee's he could get... with the hope of improving on his $39 investment.

One Red Paperclip

Posted 08 Feb, 2006 at 07:49 by blue in /Chatter | Permanent link

What would you trade for a red paper clip?

Would you trade for a cube van?

That is so far what this guy has been able to do.

Starting with a red paper clip and trading up for constantly bigger and bigger things has thus far netted him a cube van. His goal? A house. Personally, I'm curious to see if he can do it.

So... umm.. I've got several red paperclips... what will you give me for them? ;)

... you come across people in the strangest places...

While looking for information with regards to Internet Explorer 7.0 I came across a familiar name to many here who read this.

I feel like breaking out into a chours of It's a Small World...

Someone who's been trying to be helpful has suggested this site to me.

<rhetorical>It really makes me wonder whether people think I have a fetish for this stuff.</rhetorical>

For the record, I don't.

Because smaller is better

Check out the new iPod Zepto. Even smaller than the Nano...you may have some trouble locating it. This reminds me of the Onion's article on 5 bladed razors several years ago...

Automotive Gods

Posted 12 Nov, 2005 at 18:56 by blue in /Chatter | Permanent link

So you say you don't believe in God?

What about the god of money? The god of big business? The god of modern medicine, fast food, alcohol and television?

Is the car-god any less demanding of sacrifice than the God of Abraham? Abraham was only asked to give up a son. 42,636 people were killed in 2004 in vehicular accidents in the United States alone. Rows of temples to the god of the combustion engine rise in every two-bit town big enough to support a bypass... we call them AutoMalls as we speed by. We pray to their acolytes, "Just stay green a little longer! No no! Don't turn red yet!" (oh c'mon, tell me you haven't mentally said that prayer at least once!)

Have we really moved away from one god, only to supplant it with a host of others who clamour for our attention? Are Tony the Tiger and Trix the Rabbit just different faces of the same god?

And what of the old gods? The ones that came before. Can Hermes and the television carry the same message? We can look back and think of the ancients as foolish for their beliefs, but would they not look forward at as and think the same?

Who will you make your sacrifice to this year?

The Analog Hole

Posted 01 Nov, 2005 at 17:56 by blue in /Chatter | Permanent link

Some interesting reading about yet another RIAA/MIAA move to pass legislation in the US.

Personally I liked some of the entertaining comments people had written. The one making the case about the Harley made a good point in some respects... but missed the obvious fact that you can sell the original item you bought... even for a profit and 'added to'. You just can't sell "copies" of it... and I think Harley would object if you started selling knock-offs of their product too.

The Internet is for Porn

I'm sure that you all already know that The Internet is for Porn. But I'll bet you didn't expect to hear Cookie Monster singing about it! You'll need to have the sound turned on for this...not entirely worksafe (unless your coworkers have a good sense of humor).

Some MPA humour

(This is largely tongue in cheek... or me finding humour on the MPAA site. If you don't see humour in it... don't worry... it's just you. ;) )

Robot Wars

Posted 16 Oct, 2005 at 18:50 by blue in /Chatter | Permanent link

Robot Wars was a cool name for a game, or a TV show... where homemade robots duke it out for a prize.

But am I the only one scared by the way this article talks about how 'robots will be able to fight our wars without endangering a single soldier'. Umm.. I hate to say it, but do they really think that when one country's 'robot's are lying broken on the field they will just say 'Ah, dang it. Okay... you can half the country and all our money.'

A little naive I feel. And a little bit scary. Arming a bunch of robot who are able to perform tasks without any human commands. Hmmm...

Is true genius a group or individual talent?

Posted 15 Sep, 2005 at 11:55 by blue in /Chatter | Permanent link

Is it just me or do you question the 'public knows best' concept of many of the reality TV shows.

I'm speaking of the 'Choose the next... (Popstar -- Apprentice -- Boy Band -- and most recently -- movie'

It principle it seems like a sound enough concept. Gather a bunch of talent and put it out to the public to choose their favorite... after all, shouldn't the one that gets selected be the most comercially viable because it's the most popular? And in the end of the day, that is what pop music, pop culture etc is about?

The thing is... I don't buy it. I think the really pop stuff comes not from what the public things is cool at the moment, but rather that unique genius that simply does it and manages to swing the mindset of millions.

But just my opinion.

Web Comic Telethon

Posted 14 Sep, 2005 at 08:56 by blue in /Chatter | Permanent link

To support relief efforts in the southern states, a group of well know comic artists (Kim Deitch among others) have organized a (web comic telethon. If you're big into web comics, as several of you are, you might enjoy it. Even if you aren't... it's kind of an interesting social/political medium through which to witness the hurricane.

Ah, Google

Posted 09 Sep, 2005 at 13:06 by kael in /Chatter | Permanent link

Seems that typing "failure" into google and hitting "Get Lucky" links to G. W. Bush's biography.

Someone obviously has a sense of humour....

In a New York Minute

Posted 31 Aug, 2005 at 11:16 by blue in /Chatter | Permanent link

This is kind of a neat site that lists things overheard in New York...

Do a text search for javelina and read that entry... sometimes this is exactly the sort of approach I would love to take with people harassing me for change.

What about you?

What do you want from life?

Posted 31 Aug, 2005 at 06:03 by blue in /Chatter | Permanent link

What do you want from life?

It's an easy enough question to say, and I suppose if you give a flippant answer, it's an easy enough question to answer too.

However, if you put some serious thought behind it, it suddenly becomes a much more difficult and personal question.

Many of us are afraid that by acknowledging out loud what we truly desire out of life, in some ways it will jinx it. Others are simply embarrassed to admit what they want to others, since by admitting they want it implies that they don't have it already. It's a sign of vulnerability. After all... who really wants to admit that they want a pair of pink fuzzy bunny slippers?

Yet again... maybe by saying what you want you would discover either someone who has it and is willing to share... or simply that you aren't alone in your quest. I expect many of us want the same things.

So... what is it that you want from life?

Comment on this post and list your top 5. Feel free to comment on why those 5 or not. And if you are afraid... don't attach your name to the comment.

They could be material goods... (a house, a son, a firetruck with real flashy lights)... intangibles (to be loved, to be famous)... or something inbetween (to be healthy, see my grandchildren graduate).

Hows & Whys
Who we are

Blue has been known to toss a disc around a field from time to time, and thinks that you should as well. He lives either on the Internet or in Toronto, depending on your perspective. Ask him no questions and there's a good chance he'll tell you no lies. [Site]

Brent hosts the box from which we dangle our conversations, for which we are all eternally grateful. Gratitude is most easily expressed in small bills. Formerly a pawn of the Evil Empire (or maybe a Knight), he has gone over the wall and now toils at a small computer game company in Alberta that no one except for ten million gamers has ever heard of. [Site]

Kael occasionally gets called "Mike"; mostly by people who don't know him. He cooks, he cleans, he maintains Unix servers... what else could you ask for? Currently a slave to the Man, by which we mean retail sales. He has secret plans, but we can't tell you about them. In fact, we've already said too much. [Site]

Lisa is a recreational therapist without a cause. She entertains dreams of ruling over an empire of scrapbooking. Has a well-deserved reputation for enthusiasm, common sense, and tiredness. Ask her about her teapots, but don't touch them.

Matt is just this guy, you know? A mathematician by training and a layabout by inclination; he currently has an Urban Commuter Campus in the American Midwest convinced that they should pay him for plying these trades. The designer and administrator of this site, which means in a sense this is all his fault. [Site | E-mail]

Sky is a salesman during the day. At night he doesn't bother: his words are like unto those of a god, and you can agree or you can be wrong. Lives in the World of Warcraft, with a sattelite office in Toronto. Known to play games on occasion.

Wendy has never run away to join the circus, but pursuing graduate work in medical imaging is perhaps just as good. She didn't choose her current abode on the basis of proximity to a Toronto Public Library branch, but we wouldn't put it past her. Married to one of the other authors here, but you'll have to read the archives to find out which one. [Site]
