Ever heard of Gen-Pets?

Neither had I until I found a link to their site.

A little disturbing at first and I kept following links on the site looking for the page that would say "ha ha... this is all a joke".

I couldn't find it. If you can, let me know.

Looks Like I'm Moving....

Posted 19 May, 2006 at 12:51 by kael in /Social | Permanent link

I don't normally post personal stuff on here anymore, on account of I have so many friends (and privacy controls) on LiveJournal, but since there are a lot of you that read this that don't read that, I thought I'd let you all know:

My application for a transfer came through. I'll be moving to Calgary. If I wanted to, I could apparently get out there at the end of June. As it is, I'll probably aim for the end of July.

Since I don't intend to move out there permanently (a green in a sea of blues is not something I could endure forever), there'll probably be a few things I might ask people to hold for me.

More later, first I've got to mow the dandelions.

So much more than just a breakfast drink

Posted 16 Mar, 2006 at 12:50 by matt in /Social | Permanent link

The Beer Bistro: a new restaurant in downtown Toronto, devoted to the simple premise that beer makes everything better.

Any of you folks who might be in T-dot this Saturday (the 18th) should feel welcome to join Kael and I in checking this place out. Meet there around 6ish. If you're a random interweb surfer who doesn't know us, you're welcome too; I'll be the one in the funny hat.

Bored?

For those of you who live in the United States, here is a little something fun you can do...

Get a stack of $2 US bills and try to spend them.

'$2 bill' you say? 'No such' thing exists you say? Apparently, it does.

Don't think it would be entertaining? Here is a short story that illustrates some of the fun you can have.

Apparently I've Been Getting Around

Posted 21 Jan, 2006 at 20:39 by kael in /Social | Permanent link

I've been really tired lately. Partly because I've been really busy lately. Then I saw a certain movie I'm not supposed to talk about. It made me think, so I checked up on myself, and I've really really been busy:

8 Year Old College Kid

And I thought it was hard for those kids who were still a couple of years away from the drinking age. This kid hasn't even hit puberty!

Check my sidebar summary. Do the math.

I don't really want to go into it at the moment, but it was friendly.

Kamloops

Posted 05 Oct, 2005 at 21:44 by brent in /Social | Permanent link

Writing from Kamloops. Had an awesome visit with Robert, Rowena, Jonathan, Kevin, Donna, and Matt. All appear to be doing well and we had to great time and experienced a really nice Rosh Hashanah. Happy new year to all!

Tomorrow, the plan is to continue on Highway 1 to Lake Louise and then head north to Jasper and stay there overnight. Then head to Edmonton the next day.

Noticed that blosedit.pl seems to be not working. Not sure what is going on there. Sending the log data to Matt who can probably understand it much better than I.

Gullible?

Posted 19 Sep, 2005 at 09:58 by blue in /Social | Permanent link

While I'm not sure that I side with their version of answers in all cases... it still makes for interesting reading... (cause if you don't carmine is, where city fluride comes from or about gas hydrates... you're missing out ;) )

Take the Gullibility Test and then read the answers they give afterwards. They also provide links to other sites so you aren't just taking their word for it.

Is Brooke Greenberg a Hoax or Real?

Posted 01 Sep, 2005 at 14:21 by blue in /Social | Permanent link

Some of you may have heard of this already...

In Baltimore, a girl lives who is supposedly the only one of her kind on the planet. She may also hold answers to increased longevity. She is a medical mystery. She's also pretty darned cute.

Why?

Cause, at the age of 12, she is physically and mentally, still a baby.

In a quick (5 minute) quest to determine if this story was true or false I wasn't able to prove anything other than that the story has been on going on the internet for the last few years.

Here are some quick links to get you started if you want to weigh in...

When she was 8 this article ran on WBAL TV in Baltimore Same local news agency ran this update when she was 12. This site took a stab at trying to figure out the truth... they didn't get far. This site went further... again... they were unable to prove one way or the other anything about it

I have watched a video of the recent story... by all accounts it seems real. If you want to see it, let me know.

A quick search of her name on Google will turn up lots of sites... but surprisingly for something which is such a mystery... very little constructive information.

What do you think?

Real or not?

Get a little closer...

Posted 25 Aug, 2005 at 14:12 by brent in /Social | Permanent link

We're moving!

Yes, we will be moving 1 time zone closer to Ontario, the fabled homeland and birthplace.

I've accepted a position at BioWare and despite the dramatic paycut and freaking cold, I'm eagerly looking forward to it!

The plan at present is to move at the beginning of October. This will imply downtime for the web sites so if we need an interim solution and you have a recommendation on such, that would be good to know.

Google Talk

Posted 24 Aug, 2005 at 06:06 by blue in /Social | Permanent link

Has everyone seen that Google finally has created an IM client. Given how much I like their other products I'm looking forward to seeing if this is as good.

Has anyone used this yet?

Watch Me Change

Posted 20 Jul, 2005 at 13:33 by blue in /Social | Permanent link

Okay... so this is one of the more ridiculous sites I have seen yet.

The Gap, it would seem, is encouraging everyone to become a stripper.

You can create a virtual you, customize it... and then put on a strip show for your friends.

Warning: the following link contains no nudity but may still be highly disturbing to some people ;) My show is here. Did you get suckered into making one too?

Why don't you...

...get a haircut, and get a real job.

Maybe if I had a place to get my hair cut like they do in Salt Lake City I would.

Am I the only one that finds it somewhat entertaining that this place exists in the heart of Morman territory?

How to survive in prison

Posted 20 Jun, 2005 at 12:19 by blue in /Social | Permanent link

Not that I'm intending on going there any time soon (...or am I? Mwha-ha-ha... er.. ahem).

But if I was I would want to survive... as this article points out, there is more than one safe profession in the slam (just incase you don't like meat popsicles)... you can become the Prison brewmaster!

Of course, I suppose if you were gutsy you could enjoy your creations yourself, however I'm content to shell out my hard earned cash for stuff that will make me go blind instead of making my own.

Anyone ever tried this?

This is kind of a cool idea. What do you think? Is there any merit to it? Would it be successful?

Ever stop to think how lucky we are....

Posted 25 Feb, 2005 at 08:08 by wendy in /Social | Permanent link

that we all grew up with computers?

Just think for a minute about all those folks whose first encounter with a computer came when they were all grown up...and had just been sold a fancy system that someone convinced them they needed. And so their first real experience with a computer is happening at home, with a friend or relative who also hasn't got a clue. I mean, obviously they've seen a computer before, probably even used one in an internet cafe where someone else had set everything up and configured it nicely...and now they're sitting there in front of their very own machine...which they just spent more money on than they could really afford...trying to figure out whether hitting 'Ok' on the little dialog is a good thing or if it's going to get them in real trouble...

So unfortunately this is in french...but I know that at least one of you has a passing familiarity with the language. Pov tipe.

Funniest thing for me came from reading the comments after the video...I've just never seen French mangled the same way English gets mangled by people who are spelling phonetically (if at all) and using a ton of slang. And then the other people calling them on their spelling mistakes :)

Hows & Whys
Who we are

Blue has been known to toss a disc around a field from time to time, and thinks that you should as well. He lives either on the Internet or in Toronto, depending on your perspective. Ask him no questions and there's a good chance he'll tell you no lies. [Site]

Brent hosts the box from which we dangle our conversations, for which we are all eternally grateful. Gratitude is most easily expressed in small bills. Formerly a pawn of the Evil Empire (or maybe a Knight), he has gone over the wall and now toils at a small computer game company in Alberta that no one except for ten million gamers has ever heard of. [Site]

Kael occasionally gets called "Mike"; mostly by people who don't know him. He cooks, he cleans, he maintains Unix servers... what else could you ask for? Currently a slave to the Man, by which we mean retail sales. He has secret plans, but we can't tell you about them. In fact, we've already said too much. [Site]

Lisa is a recreational therapist without a cause. She entertains dreams of ruling over an empire of scrapbooking. Has a well-deserved reputation for enthusiasm, common sense, and tiredness. Ask her about her teapots, but don't touch them.

Matt is just this guy, you know? A mathematician by training and a layabout by inclination; he currently has an Urban Commuter Campus in the American Midwest convinced that they should pay him for plying these trades. The designer and administrator of this site, which means in a sense this is all his fault. [Site | E-mail]

Sky is a salesman during the day. At night he doesn't bother: his words are like unto those of a god, and you can agree or you can be wrong. Lives in the World of Warcraft, with a sattelite office in Toronto. Known to play games on occasion.

Wendy has never run away to join the circus, but pursuing graduate work in medical imaging is perhaps just as good. She didn't choose her current abode on the basis of proximity to a Toronto Public Library branch, but we wouldn't put it past her. Married to one of the other authors here, but you'll have to read the archives to find out which one. [Site]
